Their home is foreclosed and they are forced to move into a tiny apartment with the wife’s mother. The building does not accept pets. Their trio of pets is taken to the animal shelter, but two of them, a small dog and a cat, escape and go on a quest to reunite with their displaced family and rescue the aged cat that faces death at the shelter. Along the way, they pick up a mangy shepherd mix looking for a family of his own. In their journey, they face sadistic neighborhood boys, dogcatchers, and the shepherd’s vindictive former owners. At the same time, the Ness children begin their own quest to find those same animals. The quest concludes at the apartment building where the family now resides. But even when the animals manage to find their former family’s new residence, their challenges are not over. For the reunion to be successful, the animals and the children must ward off animal-hating neighbors, the shepherd’s cruel former owners and ultimately find a new place to live.
